In 1869, the San Francisco Mint struck a half dollar featuring a classic representation of Liberty. This silver coin, composed of 90 percent silver and containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, reflects the craftsmanship of nineteenth-century American coinage. The specimen survives in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that circulated during a transformative period in United States history. The obverse of the coin displays Liberty in a seated position. In her hands, she holds a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield. This design, created by Christian Gobrecht, became a staple of American silver currency. The year 1869 is boldly anchored at the bottom of the obverse. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted perched on a branch, grasping three arrows in its talons. A shield is positioned across the bird's chest, echoing the patriotic themes of the obverse. The legend features the country of origin and the denomination, abbreviated as HALF DOL.
