1871 Liberty Seated Dollar Good
In the mid-19th century, the United States Mint produced a silver dollar that captured the spirit of a growing nation. Minted from 1840 to 1873, the Liberty Seated dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. This 1871 issue, struck in 90 percent silver, contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal and carries the design work of Christian Gobrecht, whose vision defined the silver currency of the period. The obverse of the coin presents Lady Liberty in a seated position. She holds a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield, symbolizing both freedom and vigilance. The year 1871 is inscribed below this central figure. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted clutching three arrows and an olive branch, with a protective shield positioned across its chest. The reverse also features the traditional motto "In God We Trust" alongside the denomination "ONE DOL." While this particular series was minted primarily in Philadelphia, twelve branch mints also contributed to its production over its thirty-three year run. Surviving examples in Good condition offer a tangible link to the post-Civil War era, inviting enthusiasts to explore the artistry and monetary history of the Reconstruction period.
