In 1875, the Carson City mint produced a fascinating and unusual denomination: the twenty-cent piece. This specific coin, graded in Very Good condition, represents a brief moment in American numismatic experimentation. Minted with a silver purity of 90 percent, it contains 0.1447 troy ounces of precious metal. The total production for this issue was limited to 133,290 pieces, making it a compelling target for curious observers. The obverse of the coin displays a classic motif adapted from Christian Gobrecht's famous Liberty Seated concept, rendered here by designer William Barber. Lady Liberty is depicted resting on a rock, clutching a shield in one hand and a staff topped with a Phrygian cap in the other. Below her feet, the date 1875 is clearly inscribed. On the reverse, an eagle holds a bundle of arrows alongside an olive branch, representing both strength and peace. The letters CC sit below the eagle, indicating its origin at the Nevada mint. The surrounding inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY CENTS, framing the central design elements of this short-lived denomination.
