1916 Gold $1.00 McKinley MS-65 NGC

0.0483 troy oz .900 1916 NGC

In 1916, the United States issued a special gold dollar to help fund the construction of a monument dedicated to President William McKinley in Niles, Ohio. This small gold piece, containing 0.0483 troy ounces of gold, features a distinct profile of the president on its obverse. The reverse side departs from traditional coin designs by depicting the McKinley Memorial building itself, a structure meant to honor his legacy. While the original production plan called for 15,000 of these commemorative coins, public response led to a significant portion being returned to the mint to be melted down. Consequently, the final remaining mintage stands at just 9,977 pieces. This particular specimen is preserved in an exceptional certified grade of Mint State 65 (MS-65), showcasing the fine details of the architectural design and the presidential portrait as they were originally struck.
