The year 1875 marked a late chapter in the long-running Liberty Seated quarter series, a coinage that spanned the decades before, during, and after the American Civil War. This particular silver piece, struck in 90 percent pure silver, represents the artistry of Christian Gobrecht. It survives today in Very Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that likely circulated during the Reconstruction era. On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted sitting and facing to her left. She holds a staff topped by a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, while thirteen stars arch over her to represent the original colonies. The date 1875 is clearly inscribed at the bottom. Because this coin was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, it does not bear a mint mark, a common characteristic for the facility during this period. The reverse features a heraldic eagle facing left, its talons gripping an olive branch of peace alongside three arrows of defense. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination QUAR. DOL.
