In 1875, the San Francisco Mint struck a significant run of silver dimes featuring one of the nineteenth century's most enduring numismatic designs. This ten-cent coin, composed of 90% silver with a precious metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, represents a fascinating era of United States coinage. The issue had a combined mintage of 9,070,000 pieces across its varieties, making it a tangible survivor of post-Civil War commerce. The obverse of the coin showcases Liberty seated upon a rock, grasping a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield. This iconic imagery, created by designer Christian Gobrecht, is framed by the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the 1875 year of issue. On the reverse, a detailed wreath encircles the face value, which is inscribed as "ONE DIME". This particular variety is distinguished by the placement of the "S" mint mark, which is positioned below the bow of the wreath.
