This ten cent piece from 1876 represents a fascinating era of American coinage, minted at the legendary Carson City facility in Nevada. Struck in 0.900 fine silver, the coin contains approximately 0.0715 to 0.0721 troy ounces of precious metal. Its survival in Very Good condition allows us to appreciate a design that circulated widely during the late nineteenth century. The obverse side displays the classic image of Lady Liberty in a seated position. In her left hand, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her right hand rests upon a protective shield. The year 1876 is clearly inscribed beneath this central figure, surrounded by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. On the reverse, a detailed wreath encircles the face value of the coin, which is written simply as ONE DIME. The famous CC mint mark identifies its origin from the frontier mint, making this particular silver dime a compelling object of study for anyone intrigued by early American coinage and the silver boom of the Old West.
