The year 1876 marked a significant era in American history, and this silver quarter dollar captures the aesthetic of that period. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin does not display a mint mark, which is characteristic of the facility's output during this time. Composed of 90 percent silver with a precious metal weight of 0.1788 troy ounces, the coin represents a design series that spanned the decades before, during, and after the American Civil War. On the obverse, the design by Christian Gobrecht features Lady Liberty seated and facing to the left. In her left hand, she holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, while her right hand rests upon a shield. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, representing the original colonies. The year 1876 is clearly inscribed at the bottom. The reverse side presents a heraldic eagle facing left. The eagle bears a shield upon its breast, grasping an olive branch of peace in one talon and a trio of arrows in the other. The surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This piece, graded in Very Fine condition, offers a tangible look at the artistry of late nineteenth-century United States coinage.
