In 1876, the San Francisco Mint struck this silver half dollar, a coin that carries 0.3868 troy ounces of pure silver within its ninety percent silver alloy. This fifty-cent piece belongs to the long-running Liberty Seated series, representing a bygone era of American coinage before the turn of the twentieth century. The obverse features a design by Christian Gobrecht, showing Liberty seated on a rock. She holds a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests on a shield. The year 1876 is inscribed beneath her feet. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest, clutching a branch and a trio of arrows in its talons. The surrounding inscriptions include the issuing country, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination, written as HALF DOL. This particular coin has survived in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation.
