The 1876 Twenty Cent Piece represents one of the most unusual and brief experiments in the history of United States coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.1447 troy ounces, this denomination was minted in very limited quantities. In fact, only 39,700 of these coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint in 1876, making surviving examples in Very Fine condition a compelling find for those exploring nineteenth-century American currency. Designed by William Barber, the coin features the iconic Seated Liberty on its obverse. Liberty is depicted seated, holding a shield in one hand and a staff topped with a Phrygian cap in the other, with the date 1876 inscribed below. The reverse displays a majestic eagle grasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by the legends indicating the nation of origin and the denomination, spelled out as TWENTY CENTS. This particular coin has survived the decades with its design elements beautifully preserved, offering a tangible look at a denomination that quickly vanished from circulation. Its distinct physical characteristics and low mintage make it a fascinating study in the evolution of American silver coinage.
