In 1877, the Carson City Mint in Nevada produced a run of 1,420,000 silver half dollars. This fifty-cent piece, struck in 90 percent silver with a total precious metal content of 0.3617 troy ounces, carries the famous "CC" mint mark, a detail that connects it directly to the American West during the late nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features Christian Gobrecht's design of Liberty seated. She holds a pole topped with a liberty cap in one hand while resting her other hand on a shield. The reverse displays an eagle perched upon a branch, clutching three arrows in its talons, with a shield positioned across its chest. The surrounding inscription on the reverse reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOL."
