1877-CC Liberty Seated Quarter Fine
The year 1877 marked a significant era for American coinage, particularly for the silver quarter dollars emerging from the legendary Carson City Mint in Nevada. This specific coin, bearing the famous CC mintmark, represents a fascinating artifact of nineteenth-century commerce, struck during a time when silver was the lifeblood of the Western frontier. With a purity of 90 percent silver and containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal, this piece has survived in Circulated Fine condition, showing the honest wear of past transactions. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin features the iconic Seated Liberty. She is depicted resting on a rock, holding a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand, while her other hand supports a shield inscribed with the word Liberty. This elegant representation of American freedom was a staple of United States coinage throughout much of the 1800s. On the reverse, Gobrecht's design displays a powerful eagle perched upon a branch. The eagle holds three arrows in its talons, symbolizing readiness and defense, while a shield protects its chest. Below this central motif, the distinctive Carson City mintmark is placed, forever linking this quarter to the historic Nevada mint that produced a total of 4,192,000 of these quarters in 1877.
