The 1877 Liberty Seated half dollar is a compelling artifact from a bygone era of American coinage. Struck in 90% fine silver, this fifty-cent piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint during a period of significant national growth, this issue had a substantial mintage of 8,304,000 pieces, yet finding examples that survived the decades of daily commerce remains a rewarding pursuit for enthusiasts. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse depicts Liberty seated upon a rock. In her left hand, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her right hand rests upon a shield inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The year 1877 is anchored at the bottom of the design. This particular specimen is in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining the core elements of its historic imagery. The reverse features a heraldic eagle perched on an olive branch, clutching a trio of arrows in its talons. A shield is positioned over the eagle's chest, mirroring the shield on the obverse. Surrounding the central image are the bold inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination, abbreviated as HALF DOL.
