This half dollar from 1877 represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Minted in San Francisco, as indicated by the S mint mark, this fifty-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Preserved in Fine condition, the coin displays the honest wear of a piece that likely saw active circulation during the late nineteenth century. The obverse features the celebrated design by Christian Gobrecht, depicting Lady Liberty seated upon a rock. In her left hand, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her right hand rests on a shield inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below her feet is the date 1877.
