1877-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar XF

0.3868 troy oz .900 1877 Extra Fine

In 1877, the San Francisco Mint struck more than five million silver half dollars, each containing 0.3868 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver. This particular coin survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of a classic nineteenth-century design that circulated widely during a dynamic era of American growth. The obverse displays a seated representation of Liberty. She rests on a rock while supporting a shield in one hand and holding a staff topped with a liberty cap in the other. Underneath this central figure, the date 1877 is clearly visible. This elegant composition was created by Christian Gobrecht, whose work defined mid-nineteenth-century American silver coinage. On the reverse, a powerful eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest. The bird grips three arrows and an olive branch in its talons, symbolizing both strength and peace. Below this patriotic emblem, the denomination is inscribed as HALF DOL, representing a time when silver half dollars were a cornerstone of daily commerce.
