In 1877, the San Francisco Mint produced a significant run of silver quarter dollars featuring one of the most enduring motifs in American coinage. This twenty five cent piece, struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal weight of 0.1788 troy ounces, represents a fascinating era of United States currency. The coin survives today in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in active circulation during the late nineteenth century. The obverse showcases the classic representation of Lady Liberty seated upon a rock. In her hands, she holds a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests on a shield decorated with the word LIBERTY. The year 1877 is anchored at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest, gripping three arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches over the central design. This particular issue carries the S mint mark below the eagle, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility, which produced nearly nine million of these quarters.
