1878 Liberty Seated Half Dollar Good

0.3575 troy oz .900 1878 Good

The 1878 Liberty Seated half dollar represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this fifty-cent piece carries a total precious metal content of 0.3575 troy ounces. The coin survives today in Good condition, showing the honest wear of a piece that once circulated widely in everyday American commerce. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse design features Lady Liberty seated upon a rock. In one hand, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield decorated with the national emblem. The year 1878 is inscribed clearly beneath this central figure. The reverse of the coin displays a powerful eagle with a shield emblazoned across its chest. The bird is perched on an olive branch while clutching three arrows in its talons, symbolizing both peace and readiness. Surrounding this central image are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOL.
