1878 Liberty Seated Half Dollar XF

0.3575 troy oz .900 1878 Extra Fine

The 1878 Liberty Seated half dollar represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia mint, this fifty cent piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver. It remains a compelling artifact of late nineteenth century American coinage, surviving in Extra Fine condition. The obverse, designed by Christian Gobrecht, presents Lady Liberty seated on a rock. In one hand, she holds a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield. The year 1878 is inscribed below the central figure. On the reverse, a powerful eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and three arrows in its talons, surrounded by the denomination HALF DOL.
