1890 Liberty Seated Quarter VG

0.1808 troy oz .900 1890 Very Good

The year 1890 marked one of the final chapters for a classic American coin design. This Liberty Seated Quarter, struck in 90% fine silver, represents the enduring artistry of Christian Gobrecht. Circulated specimens like this one, graded in Very Good condition, carry the unmistakable wear of a coin that actively passed through the hands of late nineteenth-century Americans. On the obverse, the figure of Liberty is depicted sitting and facing toward the left. In her hand, she supports a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the date 1890 anchored at the bottom. The reverse features a heraldic eagle facing left, its chest protected by a shield, while its talons grasp an olive branch of peace and three arrows of defense. The inscriptions on the reverse include the issuing nation and the denomination of the coin.
