Introduced in the late nineteenth century, the Barber dime represents a foundational era of United States silver coinage. Minted between 1892 and 1916, each of these ten-cent pieces contains 0.0715 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver. Designed by Chief Engraver Charles Barber, the series is recognized for its traditional, formal imagery that circulated widely during a period of rapid national growth. The obverse of the coin depicts Lady Liberty facing right, adorned with a laurel wreath and a Phrygian cap. While the word Liberty is part of the original design, it is typically not visible on specimens in average circulated condition, which may also show a worn but complete outer rim. Surrounding the central bust, the inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA alongside the year of mintage. On the reverse, a lush agricultural wreath of corn, wheat, maple, and oak leaves encloses the face value, written simply as ONE DIME. In average circulated grades, the reverse rim can appear slightly weak from decades of hands-on use, reflecting the active role these silver coins played in daily American commerce.
