1892 Barber Dime XF
Numismatic
1892 Barber Dime XF
In 1892, the United States Mint introduced a fresh aesthetic to its minor silver coinage. This ten-cent piece represents the very first year of the celebrated Barber series, crafted from 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin survives in Extra Fine condition, displaying the crisp details of a design that defined turn-of-the-century American commerce. The obverse features a classical depiction of Lady Liberty, styled by designer Charles Barber. She is shown facing right, adorned with a laurel wreath and a Phrygian cap, symbols deeply rooted in classical tradition. Surrounding her portrait are the bold inscriptions of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the clear date of "1892" at the base. On the reverse, the coin features a delicate wreath that encircles the denomination "ONE DIME". The wreath is composed of local agricultural elements, framing the face value in a elegant, timeless fashion. This combination of classical allegory on the front and a naturalistic wreath on the back makes the 1892 dime a fascinating study in late nineteenth-century engraving.
