1892 Barber Half Dollar AU

The year 1892 marked a significant transition in United States coinage with the introduction of a new half dollar design. Crafted by Chief Engraver Charles Barber, this silver coin represents the debut of a series that would circulate heavily through the turn of the twentieth century. Struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint, each piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse presents a classical profile of Lady Liberty facing right. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head, secured over a traditional Phrygian cap. The word LIBERTY is clearly inscribed on her headband, while the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST arches above her image, and the first-year date of 1892 rests below. On the reverse, Barber placed a formal heraldic eagle with wings outstretched. A protective shield covers the eagle's chest, and its beak clasps a banner displaying the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. In its talons, the eagle holds both an olive branch and a cluster of arrows, symbolizing a preference for peace but a readiness for defense. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR frame this detailed patriotic scene.
