1892 Barber Half Dollar Good

0.3575 troy oz .900 1892 Good

The year 1892 marked the debut of a new aesthetic for United States silver coinage. Designed by Charles Barber, this half dollar contains 0.3575 troy ounces of silver, minted with a purity of 90 percent. As the introductory year of the series, this coin represents a major design transition at the close of the nineteenth century. The obverse presents a profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap underneath a classical laurel wreath, a combination that defines the era's coinage. Above her head, the national motto reads "IN GOD WE TRUST," while the year 1892 is anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle dominates the design. The bird is depicted with outstretched wings, protecting a shield positioned at its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a banner, while its talons grasp a symbolic olive branch and a cluster of arrows. The inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arches over the top, with the "HALF DOLLAR" denomination anchored below.
