1892 Barber Half Dollar VG

0.3575 troy oz .900 1892 Very Good

In 1892, the United States introduced a new design for its fifty cent piece, created by Charles Barber. This inaugural year coin is minted from 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of the precious metal. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, this half dollar represents the beginning of a classic era in American coinage design. The obverse of the coin showcases a profile of Lady Liberty. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head, paired with a Phrygian cap. On specimens in this Very Good state of preservation, the word Liberty on her band remains partially visible to the observer, surrounded by the stars of the original colonies and the date 1892. On the reverse, a detailed eagle spreads its wings wide. A protective shield is positioned at the center of the bird's chest, while its beak firmly grasps a decorative banner. In its talons, the eagle clutches both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing the dual concepts of peace and military readiness.
