1892 Barber Quarter AG
In 1892, the United States Mint introduced a new design for its silver quarter, created by Chief Engraver Charles Barber. This inaugural year of the series showcases a distinct late nineteenth-century aesthetic, struck in 90 percent silver with an actual silver content of 0.17875 troy ounces. The Philadelphia Mint produced these coins without a mint mark, leaving the space below the reverse design clear. The obverse features a classical depiction of Lady Liberty, her head facing right, adorned with a laurel wreath and a Phrygian cap. Above her head, the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is clearly inscribed, with the first year of issue, 1892, anchored at the bottom. This portrait established a visual identity that would dominate American silver coinage for more than two decades. On the reverse, Barber placed a formal heraldic eagle with outstretched wings. The eagle shields its chest while clutching an olive branch of peace in one claw and a cluster of arrows in the other, representing readiness. A banner held in its beak displays a traditional motto, while the surrounding inscription reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR."
