1892 Barber Quarter Fine

0.1788 troy oz .900 1892 Fine

In 1892, the United States introduced a fresh aesthetic to its silver coinage with the debut of the Barber quarter. This twenty-five cent piece, struck in 90% silver, represents the very beginning of a classic design era. Crafted by chief engraver Charles Barber, the coin features a dignified depiction of Lady Liberty on the obverse. She is shown in profile, adorned with a laurel wreath and a Phrygian cap, with the word LIBERTY clearly visible on her headband. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST arches above her, flanked by stars, with the year 1892 anchored at the bottom. The reverse side presents a detailed heraldic scene centered around an eagle with its wings fully spread. A protective shield covers the bird's chest, while its beak holds a flowing banner. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a balance of peace and readiness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR frame this intricate national symbol, making the 1892 issue a compelling study in late nineteenth-century American coin design.
