1892 Barber Quarter VF

0.1788 troy oz .900 1892 Very Fine

The year 1892 marked a significant transition in United States coinage with the introduction of a new quarter design, conceived by Chief Engraver Charles Barber. Struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this initial-year issue captures a pivotal moment in American numismatic history. The coin contains approximately 0.1808 troy ounces of silver, carrying a weight and metallic purity that served as a cornerstone of daily commerce during the late nineteenth century. On the obverse, a classical representation of Lady Liberty faces right, her hair adorned with a traditional Phrygian cap and a secured laurel wreath. A small band across her brow displays the word LIBERTY, while the year 1892 is anchored at the bottom. The design is framed by the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. The reverse presents a powerful heraldic eagle with wings fully spread, protecting a shield across its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon inscribed with the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Its talons grasp both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a preference for peace but a readiness for defense. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR encircle this intricate patriotic motif.
