The year 1892 marked a major transition in American coinage, introducing the elegant Barber design series. This particular quarter dollar, struck in 90% fine silver, represents the very first year of the design's production. Minted at the southern facility in Louisiana, it bears the distinctive 'O' mint mark on its reverse, identifying its origin from the historic New Orleans Mint. The obverse of the coin presents a classical profile of Liberty, facing right. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head and a traditional Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom. This side is framed by the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the 1892 date of issue. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle dominates the design. The eagle is depicted with wings outstretched, protecting a shield across its chest. In its beak, it holds a banner displaying the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The bird clutches an olive branch of peace in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other, representing readiness for defense. This coin contains 0.1808 troy ounces of pure silver and survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of its late nineteenth-century craftsmanship.
