The year 1892 marked the debut of a new era in United States coinage, introducing a design by Charles Barber that would grace the nation's silver denominations for twenty-five years. This particular fifty-cent piece, struck at the San Francisco Mint, carries the distinct 'S' mintmark. Having circulated heavily through the commerce of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it survives in an Almost Good 3 state of preservation, showing the honest smoothing of time while retaining its essential identity. On the obverse, the profile of Lady Liberty faces right, adorned with a laurel wreath and a Phrygian cap. The timeless motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is positioned above her portrait. The reverse features a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide, protecting a shield on its breast. In its beak, the eagle holds a banner, while its talons grasp a symbolic olive branch and a cluster of arrows.
