The 1893 Barber half dollar represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Minted at the San Francisco facility, this fifty-cent piece carries the 'S' mint mark, distinguishing it as part of a relatively small production run of 740,000 pieces. Struck in 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin displays the profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a traditional Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath, with the year 1893 visible below her portrait. The reverse of the coin showcases a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings. The eagle holds a protective shield on its chest, clutches an olive branch and arrows in its talons, and supports a banner in its beak. Even in a heavily circulated Fair state, the essential elements of this late nineteenth-century design remain recognizable.
