1894-O Barber Half Dollar VG
The 1894 Barber half dollar represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Minted in New Orleans, as indicated by the O mint mark, this fifty-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of the precious metal. Surviving in Very Good condition, the coin displays a moderate level of wear that speaks to its long journey through American commerce at the end of the nineteenth century. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse features a stoic portrait of Lady Liberty facing right. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head, layered over a traditional Phrygian cap. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed clearly above her profile, with the year 1894 anchored at the bottom. The reverse showcases a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread. A protective shield rests against the bird's chest, while its beak holds a decorative banner. In its talons, the eagle grasps a combination of an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing both peace and readiness. The surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOLLAR.
