1896-O Barber Quarter Good

The 1896 Barber Quarter is a fascinating artifact from the late nineteenth century, minted at the historic New Orleans facility, as indicated by its "O" mint mark. Composed of 90 percent silver, this twenty-five cent piece contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. Given its classification in Good condition, the coin displays the natural wear and softened details that come from extensive circulation in American commerce during the Gilded Age. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin presents a profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a traditional Phrygian cap underneath a laurel wreath, surrounded by the stars of the union and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The year of mintage, 1896, is clearly anchored at the bottom of the design. The reverse side showcases a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread. A protective shield rests upon the eagle's chest, while its talons grasp an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing peace and readiness. In its beak, the eagle holds a flowing scroll, and the entire scene is framed by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR."
