1897 Barber Dime Good/VG

0.0715 troy oz .900 1897 Good/Very Good

Introduced in the late nineteenth century, this 1897 ten-cent piece represents a classic era of United States coinage. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. It belongs to the celebrated Barber series, named after its creator, Charles Barber, who designed both the obverse and reverse faces of the coin. The front of the dime displays the profile of Lady Liberty, who wears a laurel wreath atop a Phrygian cap. On specimens in this Good to Very Good grade, the word Liberty is no longer visible, though a complete rim remains. Surrounding her portrait are the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the 1897 year of issue. On the reverse, the denomination of ONE DIME is encircled by an ornate wreath. Because of the coin's circulated state, the rim on this side may appear slightly weak in some areas, showing the honest wear of a coin that passed through many hands over a century ago.
