This 50 cent piece from 1897 offers a tangible look at late nineteenth century American coinage. Minted in Philadelphia, the silver half dollar is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of the precious metal. Having circulated through daily commerce, this coin is preserved in Fine condition, showing honest wear while retaining its essential design details. The obverse presents the profile of Lady Liberty, styled by designer Charles Barber. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head alongside a traditional Phrygian cap. The year 1897 is clearly anchored at the bottom of the design, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," arches above her image. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stretches its wings wide, protecting a shield positioned at its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon inscribed with "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Its talons grasp both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing peace and readiness. The surrounding inscription identifies the issuing nation as the "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and declares the face value as "HALF DOLLAR."
