The year 1897 brought forth this striking silver quarter, a classic example of United States coinage from the late nineteenth century. Minted in Philadelphia, this piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. Preserved in Extra Fine condition, the coin retains the sharp details of its original, intricate engraving, allowing observers to appreciate the artistry of its creator, Charles Barber. On the obverse, a regal portrait of Lady Liberty faces right, her head adorned with a traditional Phrygian cap and a delicate laurel wreath. The word Liberty is clearly legible on her headband, serving as a central focus of the design. Surrounding her portrait are the words of the national motto, In God We Trust, alongside the 1897 year of issue. The reverse of the coin displays a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread. A protective shield is positioned over the bird's chest, while its beak firmly grasps a banner. In its talons, the eagle clutches both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a readiness for peace or war. The inscriptions United States of America and Quarter Dollar frame this detailed patriotic scene.
