1897-O Barber Half Dollar AG

0.3575 troy oz .900 1897 Almost Good

The 1897 Barber half dollar represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Minted in New Orleans, as indicated by the O mint mark, this fifty-cent piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of silver, with a purity of 90 percent. Surviving in Almost Good condition, the coin shows the heavy wear of a long life in active circulation, yet its historic design remains recognizable. Created by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin showcases a profile of Lady Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap underneath a classic laurel wreath. The reverse presents a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide, protecting a shield on its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a banner, while its talons grasp both an olive branch of peace and a bundle of arrows.
