1897-O Barber Half Dollar Fine

0.3575 troy oz .900 1897 Fine

Struck in 1897 at the historic New Orleans Mint, this silver half dollar belongs to the celebrated Barber series, named after its creator, Charles Barber. Composed of 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a fascinating era of American coinage, carrying the distinctive 'O' mint mark on its surface. The obverse displays a profile of Lady Liberty, who wears a laurel wreath and a Phrygian cap. On this specific example, which is preserved in Fine condition, the word 'LIBERTY' remains partially visible across her headband. The motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' arches above her, with the year 1897 anchored at the bottom. The reverse showcases a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide, protecting a shield on its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon bearing the legendary motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. Its talons grasp both an olive branch of peace and a cluster of arrows, symbolizing strength. The country of origin and the half dollar denomination are inscribed around the coin's border.
