1897-S Barber Half Dollar AG

0.3575 troy oz .900 1897 Almost Good

The 1897-S Barber half dollar represents a fascinating era of United States coinage, struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint. This particular coin shows the heavy wear of its long journey through commerce, graded in Almost Good condition. Despite its extensive circulation, the piece retains the unmistakable outlines of its classic late nineteenth-century design, which contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Created by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin presents a profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath, traditional symbols of freedom and victory. Above her image, the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed, while the 1897 date of minting sits below. The reverse side of the half dollar features a heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide. A protective shield covers the eagle's chest, while its talons grasp an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. In its beak, the eagle holds a scroll bearing the classic motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
