Struck at the historic southern mint in New Orleans, this 1898 silver half dollar showcases the artistic vision of the late nineteenth century. Composed of 90 percent silver, which equates to 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, the coin is a survivor from a bygone era of American circulating currency. Now preserved in Very Fine condition, it displays the clear, moderate wear typical of a coin that spent time in daily commerce before being saved. The obverse presents a dignified portrait of Lady Liberty, who faces right while wearing a traditional Phrygian cap and a woven laurel wreath. A small ribbon on her crown bears the word LIBERTY, while the date 1898 is positioned clearly at the bottom of the design. Surrounding her profile are the stars of the original colonies and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle dominates the field with its wings fully spread. A protective shield is positioned over the bird's chest, and its beak clasps a banner displaying the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. In its talons, the eagle holds a symbolic olive branch alongside a bundle of arrows, representing both peace and defense. The mint mark O is visible below the eagle, identifying its origin at the New Orleans Mint.
