1898-O Barber Quarter VG
Struck in the final years of the nineteenth century, this 1898 quarter dollar represents a classic era of United States coinage. Minted at the historic New Orleans facility, as indicated by the O mint mark, this twenty five cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. It survives today in Very Good condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that circulated widely during a transformational period in American history. The coin features the artistic work of Charles Barber. On the obverse, a proud profile of Lady Liberty faces right, her hair adorned with a traditional Phrygian cap and a secured laurel wreath. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed above her, with the 1898 date positioned below. The reverse side displays a detailed heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread. A protective shield rests upon the eagle's chest, while its talons grasp both an olive branch of peace and a cluster of arrows. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon banner, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR.
