The 1898 half dollar from the San Francisco Mint offers a fascinating look at late nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this coin has survived over a century of circulation, wearing down to an Almost Good grade. This level of wear tells a story of active use in daily commerce during a bustling era of American history, leaving the essential elements of the design softly outlined yet still recognizable. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin displays the profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a traditional Phrygian cap underneath a laurel wreath, a classic symbol of freedom and victory. Above her image, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is placed, while the 1898 year of mintage is positioned directly below her portrait. The reverse side showcases a heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide, protecting a shield positioned at its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon banner, while its talons grasp an olive branch of peace alongside a bundle of arrows representing strength. The San Francisco "S" mint mark is located on this side, indicating its origin at the western mint.
