The 1899 Barber Half Dollar represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this fifty-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of the precious metal. Surviving in Very Fine condition, the coin retains much of the original detail envisioned by its creator, Charles Barber, allowing modern observers to appreciate the artistry of late nineteenth-century American currency. On the obverse, a profile of Lady Liberty faces right, wearing a traditional Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath. The word LIBERTY is visible on her band, flanked by the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The date 1899 is boldly displayed at the bottom, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse is dominated by a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings. A protective shield covers the eagle's chest, while its talons grasp an olive branch of peace and a cluster of arrows. In its beak, the eagle holds a banner inscribed with E PLURIBUS UNUM. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOLLAR frame this striking patriotic emblem.
