1899 Barber Half Dollar XF

0.3575 troy oz .900 1899 Extra Fine

The year 1899 saw the production of a classic United States silver coin, the Barber half dollar. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this fifty-cent piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of silver, with a purity of 90 percent. Surviving in Extra Fine condition, this specimen allows observers to appreciate the finer nuances of a design that defined American silver coinage at the turn of the twentieth century. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin presents a dignified profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a traditional Phrygian cap underneath a laurel wreath, symbols deeply rooted in classical imagery. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed above her, while the date 1899 is positioned at the bottom of the design. The reverse displays a bold heraldic eagle with outstretched wings. A shield protects the eagle's chest, while its talons grasp a cluster of arrows and an olive branch, representing both strength and peace. In its beak, the eagle holds a banner, and the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR" frame the central design.
