1899-O Barber Half Dollar Good
The 1899-O Barber half dollar offers a tangible connection to late nineteenth-century American coinage. Minted at the historic New Orleans facility, this ninety percent silver coin carries the distinctive "O" mint mark. Despite its heavily circulated Good condition, where the details and outer borders show characteristic wear, the core elements of this classic design remain recognizable. Created by Charles Barber, the obverse features a stoic representation of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a laurel wreath over a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is positioned above her portrait, with the year 1899 anchored at the bottom. The reverse side presents a powerful heraldic eagle with wings fully spread. A protective shield rests upon the eagle's chest, while its talons grasp an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing peace and readiness. In its beak, the eagle holds a scroll, all surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the "HALF DOLLAR" denomination.
