In 1899, the New Orleans Mint struck this silver quarter, a piece that showcases the distinctive artistry of the late nineteenth century. Crafted with a silver purity of 90 percent, the coin contains approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal. This particular specimen survives in Very Good condition, displaying the honest wear of a coin that circulated through the hands of everyday Americans at the turn of the century. The obverse features a classic profile of Lady Liberty, designed by Charles Barber. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head, paired with a traditional Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom. Arcing above her is the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, while the year 1899 is anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle commands attention with its wings spread wide. A protective shield covers its chest, and the bird holds a decorative banner in its beak. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing the dual national ideals of peace and strength. The New Orleans origin is marked by the O mint mark, situated just above the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR.
