1899-S Barber Quarter Fine

0.1788 troy oz .900 1899 Fine

Struck in the final year of the nineteenth century at the San Francisco Mint, this 1899 Barber quarter represents a classic era of United States coinage. Crafted from 90 percent silver, this piece contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. Having circulated through daily commerce, it now displays the honest wear of a coin graded in Fine condition. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin presents a profile of Lady Liberty. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head alongside a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed above her portrait. The reverse side features a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide. A protective shield is positioned across the bird's chest, while its beak holds a decorative banner. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing the dual concepts of peace and military readiness. The San Francisco "S" mint mark is located below the eagle, marking its West Coast origin.
