In the final year of the nineteenth century, the San Francisco Mint struck a limited run of 2,560,322 silver half dollars. This particular 1900-S specimen, preserved in Fine condition, offers a fascinating look at the United States coinage of the era. Composed of 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, representing a time when circulating currency carried intrinsic metallic value. The obverse features a classic depiction of Lady Liberty, styled by designer Charles Barber. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head alongside a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed above her profile, with the year 1900 grounded at the bottom. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle commands attention with its wings fully spread. A protective shield rests against its chest, while its talons grasp a cluster of arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon bearing the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arches over the top, while the "HALF DOLLAR" denomination is anchored below.
