The turn of the twentieth century brought forth a distinct era in American coinage, beautifully represented by this 1902 silver quarter. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this twenty-five cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. Surviving in Extra Fine condition, the coin retains much of the crisp detail that makes this series a favorite among enthusiasts of early twentieth-century currency. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin presents a profile of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a laurel wreath over a Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom. The word LIBERTY is visible on her headband, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed along the top rim, with the year 1902 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle dominates the design. The bird is depicted with outstretched wings, protecting a shield on its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon bearing the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Its talons grasp both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing peace and readiness. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches over the eagle, framing a design that captures the spirit of its era.
