In 1903, the United States marked a monumental milestone with a special gold dollar celebrating the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. This coin features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the president who oversaw the massive land acquisition in 1803. Crafted from 90 percent pure gold, the small coin contains 0.0483 troy ounces of precious metal and stands as a fascinating artifact from the early twentieth century. The reverse of the coin displays a simple yet elegant olive branch, symbolizing peace, alongside the dual dates of 1803 to 1903. This date range highlights the one hundred years that had passed since the historic territory deal. The design was the work of Charles Barber, whose artistic touch defined many United States coins of this era. While the Philadelphia Mint initially produced 17,500 of these commemorative gold pieces, their survival was severely limited. A large portion of the original mintage was eventually returned to the mint to be melted down, leaving far fewer intact for future generations to study. This particular example survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, offering a clear look at a design that narrowly escaped the melting pot.
