1903 Gold $1.00 Louisiana Purchase Jefferson MS-65 NGC

0.0483 troy oz .900 1903 NGC

In 1903, a special gold coin was minted to celebrate a monumental moment in American history. This one dollar coin, struck in 0.900 fine gold, contains 0.0483 troy ounces of precious metal. Designed by Charles Barber, it stands as a fascinating artifact from the turn of the twentieth century, created specifically to commemorate the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. The front of the coin displays a detailed, left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the president who oversaw the vast territorial acquisition. On the back, the design features a simple olive branch alongside the dual dates of 1803 and 1903, marking the century that had passed since the historic agreement. Though 17,500 of these gold dollars were originally struck, their journey through time was precarious. Initially offered to the public for three dollars, many of the coins did not find homes. A large portion of the unsold mintage was sent back to the United States Mint to be melted down, making surviving examples quite scarce. Interestingly, those that did sell were packaged in highly unusual ways, sometimes mounted into decorative spoons, secured onto stick pins, or tucked into small cardboard boxes. Today, encountering a specimen preserved in a high certified grade like Mint State 65 offers a rare glimpse into the grand celebrations of the 1903 St. Louis Exposition.
